5 tips to make your wedding a vintage day

After the ‘make do and mend’ mantra of wartime Britain the 1950’s brought an air of optimism and daring. Queen Elizabeth II was crowned and Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay reached the roof of the world. Glenn Miller’s Moonlight Serenade was replaced by Elvis Presley’s Heartbreak Hotel as young girls swooned at the sight of the gyrating Adonis from the Mississippi. Now vintage is back in a big way and there are endless possibilities for you to create the perfect fifties’ wedding. Here are just 5 suggestions to help your guests’ rock around the clock until the wee small hours of the morning.

Refreshments, Music, Food, Fun & the Ride
  1. Cocktail hour – The three Martini lunch was legendary among the ad men of Madison Avenue. Instead of a glass of champagne when your guests arrive why not offer them a true taste of the era with a classic Dry Martini with a gin base, Manhattans made with rye and sweet vermouth or, if it has to be fizz, go for the legendary Champagne Cocktail with sugar, bitters and a brandy base. For the younger guests milkshakes will always hit the spot.

  2. Be-Bop-A-Lula - The music in the fifties ranged from the crooning tones of Sinatra to Rock ‘n’ Roll. There are numerous bands on the circuit who can get your guests jiving with the best of them. Or, if you prefer your own mix of fifties music, you can hire a Wurlitzer jukebox complete with iPod docking port.

  3. Formal or fun food? – If you want to go down the formal route authentic 1950’s fayre would be roast crown of lamb, baked ham or duck a l’orange. Or you could add a fun twist and go down the American route (66 of course) with burgers and hotdogs buffet style. Or add a candy floss or toffee apple cart for a real wow factor and some extra pizazz.

  4. All the fun of the fair – Fairgrounds were big business in the fifties. So for some added entertainment hire some fairground type stalls like a coconut shy or hoopla. A vintage style photo booth complete with a red carpet will also give your guests some fantastic mementos of your special day.

  5. Riding along in my automobile – To top of your day why settle for a limo when you can both disappear Sandy and Danny style by hiring an authentic Cadillac convertible. We won’t guarantee you’ll actually fly but after a wedding like this you’ll feel as if you could.
